entertaining…?

Jeremiah's Menu-Enteraining-Church

I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity. I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?”

Ecclesiastes 2:1-2 ESV

entertain… to show hospitality to… to keep, hold, or maintain in the mind… to receive and take into consideration… to provide entertainment for…

entertainment… the act of entertaining… amusement or diversion provided especially by a performer… something diverting or engaging… as a public performance… a usually light comic or adventure novel…

–Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Ed.

Twice recently… at church… the subject of games came up in the realm of teaching youth and young adults…

Are we playing a game today…?

Perhaps it was a hopeful question on their part… but it makes me wonder if it’s something they’ve come to expect… to be entertained…

The same issue infiltrates adults too… but instead of games… its focus is the music… the message… or the means by which it is delivered…

Entertain… it’s a double-edged word…

One side is focused on self… seeking entertainment when we’ve come to visit…

The other edge… focused on the prospect of receiving… considering… taking away something to hold in the mind… make part of your life…

And it just makes me wonder… if we come to church with the expectation of being entertained… or with the purpose of entertaining God in worship… engaging His Word… and considering the challenges of living a spiritual life of faith…

Do we come because it’s entertaining…? or because it encourages us to entertain the things of God…?

I sense a stirring of holy discontent… a spirit a bit concerned… regarding the entertaining engaged in at church… especially when you consider life is short… and the time to influence children… teens… young adults… even shorter…!

I’m not saying games are bad… or entertainment is to be shunned… there is a time and place for everything…

But the gatherings of His people are best served… when we strive to create an environment… to help others entertain… consider…  hold fast… His Way… rather than attempt to simply entertain…

Isn’t that what we’re really looking for…? seeking…? a means by which to entertain Him…?

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Psalm 63:1-5 NIV

Entertaining…? on which side of this word do you find yourself…? when it comes to gathering with His people…?
