authority revealed…

Continuing to walk along with Jesus… this Holy Week…

Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away!”

So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. …”

Mark 11:20-24 NKJV

Peter was amazed… what Jesus cursed… withered away…

How many times have you heard people curse something because it didn’t meet their needs… but nothing happened in response to the curse…?

I’m sure Peter heard plenty of ineffectual… empty… curses in his life time… probably even spoke a few himself… but Jesus… His faith in His Father comes with authority and power…

Jesus goes so far as to teach His disciples… if they have faith in the Father… He will give them authority over the things of the world too…

But faith with authority… is faith that first and foremost comes under authority… the authority of the Father…

Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. …”

John 5:19 NKJV

Jesus revealed His authority… and the source of His authority…

Then they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to Him. And they said to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things?”

But Jesus answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: The baptism of John — was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me.”

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men'”– they feared the people, for all counted John to have been a prophet indeed. So they answered and said to Jesus, “We do not know.”

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do theses things.”

Mark 11:27-33 NKJV

The things He did for which they questioned His authority included… tossing tables… teaching… and healing… on the Sabbath no less…

But Jesus would not answer them until they wrestled with their own impotent authority…

In their discussion of how to answer… in their coming to their profound… We don’t know… they revealed they had no real authority over the people… or Jesus for that matter…

Their answer was manufactured in a way… to avoid any confrontation… of any kind…

Those with authority… gladly face those who question it…

Jesus revealed His greater authority… by refusing to dignify their response with an answer…

By faith in the Father… all authority in heaven and on earth… was given to Him…

“…For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. …”

John 5:21-23 NKJV
