Holy Spirit · Obedience · Prayer

still… awkward…

She stands behind the counter slicing my honey ham and smoked turkey… she talks to her coworker about a surgery she’ll have soon… and how she may not be able to work in the deli after…

I stand… wait… listen… and I hear His still small voice… Offer to pray for her…

I continue to stand… wait patiently… smile… and keep my mouth shut…

I watch her slice… weigh… package… the ham… then the turkey… all the time she’s talking about her health… chatting with the other behind the counter… He talks to me… Offer to pray for her…

And I wait patiently… and apparently so does He… Offer to pray for her…

She finishes my order… hands me my packages… I say… Thank you… and walk away…

I only make it about 10 feet… park my cart… turn around… and return to the counter… Are you having surgery on your hand…?

She tells me yes… and what she has wrong with her wrist… and the disease in her hand… which if not taken care of will cause her hand to curl permanently…

Humbly I ask… Can I pray for you…?

She says yes… removes a glove… offers her hand over the counter… Heavenly Father… we praise You…

After the prayer she looks at me and says… That makes me so happy…!

And I smile… I’m glad… and think to myself… I just feel awkward…

I go on about my shopping… wondering why it’s still so awkward after all these years to surrender… obey… the Spirit’s prompting to pray…

I’ve only ever had one person say no… and that was a Jehovah’s witness on my front porch… he left so quickly I could hardly believe it…

But obeying the Spirit… for my flesh… is still awkward… yet my spirit rejoices… that He used me to bless someone…

A sign there’s still too much of me… and not enough of Him…

He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 ESV

Amen…
